Although the article is written (link following this post) with only a light application of tact, the presentation of these findings was needed and positively corresponds with my experience consulting for corporations who only know that if they want to stay ahead, they need to be persuing the most recent buzz word. Mobile, Social Media, Social Networking, Machups, Wiki, or Blog are a few examples that come to mind. Our goal as providers of fantastically useful web applications should be to really break down the necessity or lack-there-of for these types of applications with regards to industry, audience, and impact instead of just budget.

My suggestion in actively pursuing providing useful solutions to your clients is to keep handy a tool box of research gadgets. Start out with whitepapers or informative studies from such groups as PARC’s UI Research Group or read blog postings on the topic.. You can also hire small focus groups to test out your UI or application ideas. If you want to go more high tech run your GUI through cheap user testing ($19) from sites like usertesting.com.
